How 'progressive'? Interestingly, the first black Mayor in Britain was one Mayor Minns (1858 to 1930) who held office in the early 1900s. By one of those perfect Partridgian coincidences, he held the post in Thetford, Norfolk - and his first name was... Allan.

The American singer-songwriter and bandleader Sly Stone died yesterday.



Born Sylvester Stewart, Chris Morris is a fan of Sly's music, which is why the weather forecaster in The Day Today just happens to be called Sylvester Stuart. The summary, then? Breezes.
