ON THE HOUR, Episode One

There's a sketch about a corrupt police unit that arrests hundreds of people for barmy reasons. I'm guessing it was based on a real life fuzz from Wigan - Sir James Anderton, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester between 1976 and 1991 who was known as 'God's copper'. The character played by Patrick Marber - Sir Michael Cogg-Lucifer, Chief Constable of Doncaster Police - sounds like a thinly-veiled parody.

You can listen to the sketch here, starts at 2:38.

The interviewee Alex Maloney, who actually gave talks and wrote a book on the subject ('Rock Music: The Citadel of Satan') didn't realise he was being sent up - something Chris Morris would do to unsuspecting members of the public (and Edmonds) many times.
